Blue eyes, grey hair. Dressed in a dark green stock, white shirt, dark brown coat and yellow jewelled stock-pin. Seated in a red armchair, holding a pair of spectacles in one hand, and a green object (spectacle case?) in the other. Background colour very dark brown.

The artist; presented by his brother, Henry Gordon, to the National Gallery, 1865, and subsequently transferred.
