According to a letter written by Edmund Gosse (archives of Carlyle's House, London), Boehm took a cast of Carlyle's hands, while working on his 1875 statue of Carlyle (see NPG 658). The hands in this cast and on the statue are identical. The plaster cast of the hands at Carlyle's House (there is also a bronze cast there), given by Lady Gosse, is not signed by Brucciani & Co, and may be Boehm's original cast. Boehm presumably sold his copyright to Brucciani & Co, who produced an edition of casts.
