This is one of a large collection of original studies for Vanity Fair, which were owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Cottesloe was published in Vanity Fair as a coloured lithograph, on 22 July 1876, with the title, 'Customs'.

Grey hair. Dressed in a black stock, white shirt, black suit, shoes and top-hat, holding a black cloak(?) over his arm and carrying an umbrella.
