The image of Du Maurier fashioning a slender female foot may be a reference to Little Billee’s fetishization of Trilby’s ‘little left foot’ in Du Maurier’s hugely popular novel Trilby (1894). This suggests a date in the 1890s for the drawing.

On the back of the drawing are a face of the same sitter almost in profile to the left, crossed through, and the inscription ‘Punch Chap V’ and ‘110’ in red ink.[1]
