In the Partridge sketch-book, on the blank page immediately preceding this drawing, is inscribed in pencil, 'Dyce'. No other early portraits of Dyce are known, but this drawing agrees well with later portraits of him, and it seems certain that it is correctly identified. Both Partridge and Dyce were in Rome in 1825.

Purchased from the artist's collateral descendant, Mrs Ursula Richmond, 1955.
