The date is based on costume and the apparent age of the sitter. It cannot be later than 1830 when Lady Ellenborough divorced her husband. No finished miniature of Lady Ellenborough is known. Another sketch by Hayter of similar date (NPG 883(9)) is also inscribed 'Lady Ellenborough', but seems to represent a much older woman, possibly Anne, wife of the 1st Baron Ellenborough.
