Eliza Fox first married Frederick Bridell, and then George Fox, her first cousin. According to the donor (letter of 5 May 1904, NPG archives), this portrait was painted after Fox had retired from Parliament, so must date from between 1863 and his death in June 1864. Richard Garnett, who first approached the NPG on the donor's behalf, and who wrote the entry on Fox in the Dictionary of National Biography, thought the portrait was an excellent likeness (letter of 23 April 1904, NPG archives). An earlier drawing of her father by Mrs Bridell was engraved by R. Woodman, published C. Fox, 1845 (example in NPG); she also exhibited a drawing of him, RA, 1853 (953).
