This painting was engraved by J. Brown, published J. Murray, 1873 (example in NPG), for Mrs Grote's Personal Life of George Grote. The name of the artist and the date were apparently provided by the donor, probably by word of mouth, as they are not mentioned in any correspondence. Scharf listed them in his first catalogue of the NPG collection (1888). Grote is seen reading a book, the only decipherable word being Car at the top of the page; it may possibly be a dictionary.

Healthy complexion, brown eyes, brown hair and whiskers. Dressed in a white stock, white scarf(?), dark green coat with dark velvet collar. Reading book on a red-covered table. Greenish background.
