This is one of a large collection of original studies for Vanity Fair, which were all owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Hampton was published in Vanity Fair as a coloured lithograph on 12 February 1870 as 'Statesmen No.40.', with the title, 'He was Chairman of Quarter Sessions and reconstructed the Navy'. The document sticking out of his trouser pocket is inscribed, 'Use &/Abuse/of/Breech -/Muzzle/Loaders/by J. P.' This document does not appear in the lithograph.

Greyish hair and whiskers. Dressed in a black neck-tie, white shirt, grey waistcoat, black coat, dark grey trousers, and black shoes, holding a pair of glasses and a furled umbrella. Brownish foreground, green background.
