This is one of several studies in the NPG for Salter's large picture of the 'Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House', now in the collection of the Duke of Wellington; the group portrait was engraved by W. Greatbach, published F. G. Moon, 1846 (example in NPG). Hardinge is wearing the uniform of a major-general.

Healthy complexion, bluish eyes, greying brown hair. Dressed in a red uniform, with gold-braided collar, epaulettes and cuffs, multi-coloured medals and orders, gilt sword-belt and sword-hilt, black trousers with gold stripe, holding a black hat with gold decorations and white feathers. Background landscape colour, various tones of dark brown and green.
