This is a study for the 1849 portrait of Hardinge by Grant in the collection of Viscount Hardinge, a replica of which is also in the NPG (NPG 437). The study is almost identical in pose and detail with the finished work, except that Hardinge is looking further to the right. The arrangement of the fort and tents in the background differs slightly.
