Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge of Lahore

This picture is a replica of the portrait of 1849 in the collection of Viscount Hardinge, recorded in Grant's 'Sitters Book' (copy of original MS, NPG archives), under the year 1850. The original was engraved by J. Faed, published Colnaghi, 1851 (example in British Museum), and by G. J. Stodart (example in NPG). The idealized Indian landscape behind recalls Hardinge's campaigns in that country. He is wearing the star of the Bath, and the sword which Napoleon wore at Waterloo, presented to him by the Duke of Wellington at the Great Review of the Allied Army in 1816. [1] A study for the 1849 portrait is also in the NPG (508). A copy by W. M. Loudan of 1883 is in the East India and Sports Club, London, and a small copy was exhibited VE, 1892 (339) lent by the 2nd Viscount Hardinge.

Healthy complexion, blue eyes, grey hair. Dressed in a dark stock, white shirt, black coat, silver star, red and gold-braided sword belt, gilt sword-hilt. Brownish landscape behind. Yellow, brown and greenish sky.
