By descent to Brockedon's daughter, Elizabeth, wife of J. H. Baxendale; bequeathed to the National Gallery by their son, J. W. Baxendale, with a life interest to his son, Colonel J. F. N. Baxendale and male heirs; placed on loan at the NPG by Colonel Baxendale, 1931; on his death in 1958, without male issue, officially transferred to the National Gallery; on permanent loan from the National Gallery since 1958.
