The donor wrote about this portrait (letter of 28 June 1869, NPG archives): 'Only two portraits were ever painted of the famous wit, - & this is certainly the better. I have the two in my house.' Another portrait by Macnee was exhibited RA, 1852 (609), unless this is the NPG portrait, which was subsequently re-dated.

Blue-grey eyes, brown hair with grey streaks. Dressed in a dark stock, white shirt, green and gold figured waistcoat, silver watch-chain, dark coat and trousers. Seated in a red chair. Green landscape to left. Rest of background brown.
