The portrait was probably commissioned by the donor's father, James Muspratt, who was a close friend of both Knowles and the artist. The donor, himself the godson of Knowles, also bequeathed a bust of Lord Brougham by J. Adams Acton (NPG 2004). Rubicund complexion, bluish-grey eyes, light brown hair. Dressed in a dark stock, white shirt, and black suit. Seated in a red armchair. Background colour dark brown.
