This is closely related to Grant's small portrait in the NPG (1018; see also NPG 834), and was probably executed at the same time. It is mounted between two small drawings in pen and wash by Landseer of pheasants and woodcock; they are almost identical with two drawings which Landseer executed at the top of a sportsman's card, together with four other sketches of game, at Woburn Abbey in 1826, reproduced The Strand Magazine, I (1891), 335, when they were in the collection of the Duke of Bedford. The woodcock were originally thought to be snipe, but the mistake was pointed out by D. C. Ireland in 1882 and 1891 (letters in NPG archives). Viscount Hardinge was chairman of the NPG trustees. Both he and his father were close friends of Sir Francis Grant.
