According to the catalogue of the Victorian Era Exhibition, this drawing was executed in 1872 when Lawrence was president of the Megara Commission. This was confirmed in an interview with the donor (memorandum of 9 March 1933, NPG archives), who stated that the portrait was considered by Lawrence's family to be the best likeness of him.
