The head in this portrait is almost identical with the larger portrait of McClintock (NPG 1211), but the pose, costume and setting are entirely different. McClintock is wearing the full-dress uniform of a naval captain (1856 pattern) with less than three years service, and the Arctic Medal (1818-55). Either this portrait, or NPG 919, was engraved by H. Davis, published Graves, 1860 (example in British Museum). The date was provided by the artist in a memorandum of c.1899 (NPG archives).
