and inscr. faintly in pencil bottom left: ‘Wm McTaggart RSA.’

In 1892 McTaggart was 58 and living at Dean Park, Broomieknowe, and Hodgson travelled there to make the portrait. This was also the year of McTaggart’s self-portrait, Oak Leaves in Autumn, a rare exercise in self-examination for this artist.
