This is a study for the painting of Outram by Brigstocke in the Oriental Club, London, exhibited RA, 1863 (346), of which there is a lithograph by R. J. Lane of 1863 (example in NPG); another version was in the collection of Henry Havelock Allan, 1909. A photograph of the NPG painting taken at the 1868 exhibition (example in NPG) shows that Brigstocke subsequently cut it down in size, softened the features, and washed out the details of costume and medals, which had previously been roughly indicated in chalk; there are still enough identical details to identify the NPG portrait as the one exhibited by Brigstocke.
