This is one of a large collection of original studies for Vanity Fair, which were all owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Panizzi was published as a coloured lithograph on 17 January 1874, as no. LXXVII of 'Men of the Day', with the title, 'Books'.

Healthy complexion, grey hair and white beard. Dressed in a dark grey suit and waistcoat. Holding a reddish book on a table, with a walking stick. Colour of floor reddish-brown, and of background blue.
