This cast is directly related to the marble bust of Seaton by Adams of 1863 in the United Service Club, London, exhibited RA, 1864 (1005), reproduced as a woodcut ILN, XLIV (1864), 96, with an accompanying commentary: 'we think this the best bust we have seen from this hand, and the more creditable to him as a posthumous work'. In 1866 Adams executed a bronze statue of Seaton at Mount Wise, Devonport, reproduced as a woodcut ILN, XLIX (1866), 584, a model for which was exhibited RA, 1867 (1013). The NPG bust was purchased at the same time as several other works by Adams.
