This drawing of Frank Short was purchased for £25, as part of a collection of 43 drawings by William Rothenstein, from Deval and Muir, Bishop’s Stortford, in April 1970. It is preparatory to the lithographic portrait, which is a slightly larger composition which carries a dedication to the sitter, and is signed, dated and inscribed on the stone. Some of the lithographs were printed in red ink (see NPG D20899).
See ‘Drawings by Sir William Rothenstein, 1899–1938’, NPG 4763–4805.
