As with most of Shrewsbury’s portraits, the head in NPG 1424 copies a pattern first seen in the Kneller whole-length of c.1685-90 at Eastnor.
NPG 1424 is copied from the three-quarter-length attributed to Kneller showing Shrewsbury with the chamberlain’s staff in his right hand, the Household key at his belt and his ducal coronet to the right, indicating a date of 1699-1700. Versions of this three-quarter-length pattern (which includes a grisaille vestal virgin(?) in the right background) appeared at Christie’s, 19 June 1970, lot 99, and 22 March 1974, lot 105, and two were at Ingestre.
