The original backing is inscribed: Mrs Elizabeth Stuart/the Wife of/James Stuart Esq/surnamed/Athenian/Born: 12 August 1762/Maried [sic] at the Age 17/Died 30 Novemr 1799.

Dated by the sitter’s dress and apparent age. Presented by her son, with the miniature of her husband (NPG 55a), as ‘painted at the same time by the same artist’, [1] but NPG 55b is of lower quality and appears to have been painted later as a pendant (there is a comparably discreet architectural setting).
