This drawing is not unlike H. E. Doyle's style (it is quite untypical of Richard Doyle's work), and the label may well have confused the two artists. There are old damage marks on the drawing, on the right cuff, on the mitre at the right, and the scoured lines lower left and centre. For another drawing by H. E. Doyle see NPG 4237, and for one attributed to R. Doyle see NPG 4619. A water colour by H. E. Doyle of 1858 is in the Irish NPG, possibly that exhibited RA, 1858 (794) and Dublin Exhibition, 1872, 'Portraits' (425), lent by the artist. Two drawings said to be by Richard Doyle are in a scrapbook owned by the Earl of Wemyss.
