The bronze is one of many by David typifying the revival of the cast medallion. Versions are in the Musée d'Angers and the British Museum, the latter signed on the back by the founder Louis Richard (see Mark Jones, The Art of the Medal, 1979, p 110 and The Medal: Mirror of History (British Museum exhibition 1979), p 36 no. 2).
