This drawing is part of a large sequence of portraits by (William) Walker Hodgson, depicting figures associated with the arts.
On 7 December 1891, the date of this portrait, the sitter, living in Rosslyn Hill, Hampstead, was a doyen of the watercolour world, ‘whose broad and masterly drawings of poetic landscape have been the artistic wonder of recent years’. [1] The inscription ‘V.P.R.I’ refers to his vice-presidency of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour from 1884 to 1895.
