Ervine worked as a clerk in a Belfast Insurance office from the age of 14, moving to a similar position in London when he was 17, in 1901. He lived in England, mainly in London and Devon, for the rest of his life apart from briefly managing the Abbey Theatre in Dublin (1915-16), war service in France (1917-18) and two extended visits to USA (1920, 1928-9). He made his name in the 1920s both as a dramatist and as an influential theatre critic on the Observer (1920-39).
