Painted at a time when Arcadian themes were fashionable, the Duchess is shown enjoying a rustic idyll. Her hand rests on a milk pail while a real milkmaid is shown milking cows in the background. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
