Catholic lords Thomas Percy, Earl of Northumberland and Charles Neville, Earl of Westmorland lead the Northern Uprising against the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I in an attempt to place the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots on the English throne. The rebellion meets with little success and the leaders flee.
The first official lottery in England is held to raise funds for public works.

The Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator produces a map of the world with lines of longitude to assist navigation at sea.

International

During the French Wars of Religion, the leader of the Huguenots (French Protestants), Louis de Bourbon, Prince of Condé is defeated and killed at the Battle of Jarnac. The Huguenots regroup with Admiral Gaspard de Coligny as their military leader.
The Union of Lublin unites Lithuania and Poland, forming the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under the sovereignty of Sigismund II Augustus.
