Amid fears of a military insurrection and petitions calling for the re-establishment of the Commonwealth, Lord Protector, Richard Cromwell resigns. The Rump Parliament is reinstated, abolishing the Protectorate.
Royalist uprising, led by Colonel George Booth, is suppressed.
Anne Hyde secretly marries James, Duke of York in the Netherlands.

Art and science

Dutch astronomer, Christiaan Huygens, publishes Systema Saturnium, expounding his theory that rings surround planet Saturn. It also includes the first known drawing of the Orion Nebula.
Diarist, John Evelyn, publishes the pro-royalist tracts, A Character of England and An Apology for the Royal Party, two of his earliest works.


International

The position of Henry Cromwell, younger son of Oliver Cromwell, as chief administrator of Ireland collapses soon after the fall of his brother, Richard Cromwell and the Protectorate. He returns to England in June, never to return to Ireland.
