If this is a portrait of the Rev. Chancellor James Carrington (1718/9-1794) of Exeter Cathedral, then the original (miniature) was indeed done by James Nixon. ca. 1783 when he did also Mrs Carrington, née Welch - these being the parents of Frances Carrington (1752-1823) who married Nixon in 1777. Nixon's dates are July 1741-1812, dying at Tiverton - close that is to Exeter, etc

William Carrington - of Exeter? - If so, he was father-in-law to James Nixon, A.R.A. (1741-1812). The miniature from which it was derived was exhibited at the RA in 1783 [check Graves]; this and a miniature of Mrs Carrington mentioned in the will of Mrs Nixon in 1823
