James Northcote's oil painting was commissioned in 1792 for Robert Bowyer's Historic Gallery and was illustrated in the 1806 edition of David Hume's History of England. Abbot Feckenham was sent by Queen Mary in an attempt to convert Lady Jane to Catholicism. A menacing guard brandishes a crucifix and a key, implying that Lady Jane could secure her freedom and save her life if only she would renounce her Protestant faith. Instead, she turns her back to pray, preferring death to apostasy.
