This ceramic half-length portrait of Bakewell is the final and most successful of a trio of portraits Barton has made of the sitter since 2012 and part of a series of portraits of influential women. The sitter glances to the viewer’s left and appears to be in the act of speaking. When viewed from the front, the free-standing bust achieves the illusion of a fully-realised figure, although the features are modelled in low-relief and the rear of the sculpture is left unworked.
