Travis, named after a character in Wim Wenders' film Paris,Texas, emerged on the pop scene in 1997 with their album Good Feeling reaching number seven in the charts. In 2000 at the Brit Awards they won the Best British Group and Best British Album for The Man Who. Hit singles including Why Does It Always Rain on Me? and Sing have confirmed their position at the top of the pop pantheon underlined by their Brit Award as Best Group in 2002.

The Eden Project opens in Cornwall. The eco-centre, conceived by Tim Smit, replicates tropical and temporal climates and houses plants from all over the world in two domed biomes.
