To mark the conclusion of Congress of Nymwegen, in 1679, he had this portrait painted in the Netherlands. It recalls Aubrey's description of him: a strong body for study, indefatigable, temperate and vertuous, God blesse him.

An adaptation of Sophocles's Oedipus is published, a collaboration between poet laureate, John Dryden and playwright, Nathaniel Lee. It becomes a hugely successful stage production during the Restoration period.Composer, Henry Purcell, becomes organist of Westminster Abbey.
