The difficult question for the British government, headed by Prime Minister Lord Liverpool, was what to do with such an illustrious living military personality. Wellington's international fame and prestige were virtually without precedent, and for him to remain within the army in a purely military capacity would have appeared insufficient recognition of this status. The solution was to invite him into government, but this was not an offer that he accepted without hestitation.
