In this portrait, Francis Price holds a drawing of the eastern crossing roofs of Salisbury Cathedral, which he had designed. His book of observations on the cathedral is one of the first architectural studies of a Gothic building. The painted wooden frame of the portrait alludes to Price's popular book of instruction The British Carpenter, used by builders and architects, including Nicholas Hawksmoor, who called it a 'very useful and instructive piece'. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
