In this portrait, Hamilton is pictured in front of his 1964 work, Epiphany. The painting is based on a lapel badge that the artist saw on his first visit to America. For Hamilton, the badge, which reads 'Slip it to me', epitomised the 'audacity and wit' of American art that he so admired. The work has been variously interpreted as a 'readymade' in the Duchamp tradition and in the context of Op art because of the complementary colour pairing of orange and blue. The title reflects Hamilton's belief that poetic ideas in art could be transferred through contemporary media.
