A poet, writer, journalist and editor of The London Magazine from 1961, Ross praised Fleming's first Bond novel in his Times Literary Supplement review as 'an extremely engaging affair'. Ross and Fleming became close friends, and are pictured here with Fleming's wife at Goldeneye in Jamaica. Fleming often used friends and acquaintances as the basis for his characters, and Ross was the influence for Commander Ross in The Man with the Golden Gun (1965), which Fleming was writing at the time of this photograph, a few months prior to his death.
