The diplomat and humanist Sir Thomas Elyot publishes The Boke Named the Governour, which praises the natural legitimacy of monarchical power and describes the ideal education - classics, physical education and music - for young men of the governing class.

International

Ulrich Zwingli, leader of the Swiss Reformation, is killed at the Battle of Kappel during the civil war between Protestant Zürich and the Catholic Forest Cantons. The resulting peace treaty grants freedom of religious worship to Swiss Protestant communities.
