Artist Humphrey Ocean has a long association with the National Portrait Gallery, having won the Gallery's annual portrait prize in 1982, subsequently undertaking commissions of sitters including Sir Paul McCartney (1983) and Philip Larkin (1984). This portrait pairs an artist and sitter who share a relationship with the Gallery, and who are friends. Lerner has collected Ocean's work for many years and appeared as a sitter in the 2012 Gallery display Humphrey Ocean: A handbook of modern life. It was painted from life in Ocean's studio and the artist has applied a pattern of multi-coloured African beads to the frame. The portrait was commissioned in recognition of the Lerner's patronage of the arts and his support of the National Portrait Gallery, as well as charities in the West Midlands local to Aston Villa.
