Barnard was invested by George IV as a Commander of the Guelphic Order on 15 June 1828 (see RCIN 1145267.g) - on his retirement as Librarian. Knight's portrait, and Reynolds' reproductive engraving, must post-date that event.
(I don't have access to Graves RA Exhibitors, but it wd be worth checking Knight's exhibits in case this portrait was shown.)
