Charlemont and his close ally Henry Grattan led the Irish nation throughout the 1780s and 1790s, backed by the Irish 'volunteers'. They were a loyal body - formed in response to the threat of French invasion - who had significant political influence. Charlemont was instrumental in organising volunteer rallies and conventions through which the wishes of the Irish nation could be accurately represented to the British administration. He was determined to live in Ireland in protest at the large number of absentee Anglo-Irish landlords who provoked considerable resentment. His Dublin townhouse became a social centre for the liberal upper classes.
