John Phillpotts 1775-1849 was older brother of Bishop Henry Phillpotts of Exeter, sons of a Herefordshire man, successively brickmaker in Bridgwater and innkeeper and agent to the Dean & Chapter in Gloucester. He was an energetic mayor of Gloucester and became MP for Gloucester in 1830 and retired in 1847. From 1842 he owned Porthgwidden at Feock, Cornwall. His only son was the Rev Thomas Phillpotts, vicar of Feock 1844-90.
