Thomas Charles Wageman Album
189 Portraits in set
An album containing 187 prints by and after Thomas Charles Wageman (1787-1863) and his son Michael Angelo Wageman (1821-1898). The majority of this album comprises prints made after drawings and watercolours by Thomas Charles Wageman. He was exceptionally prolific and produced hundreds of portraits. Much of the prints made after his watercolours and drawings of actors and actresses were published in Dolby's British Theatre, Proprietors of the London Stage by Sherwood, Jones & Co., Oxberry's Dramatic Biography, Finden's Dramatic Works and Cumberland's British and Minor Theatres. These prints were also sold and collected independently of publications and many examples which can be found in the Reference Collection at the National Portrait Gallery were hand-coloured. Wagemans portraits of non-theatrical sitters were often published in journals such as La Belle Assemblée, the Evangelical Magazine, the Congregational magazine and the Ladies' Monthly Museum.
