These portraits of senior British officers are by the journalist-illustrator Inglis Sheldon-Williams. They were signed by the sitters on Lord Roberts's final day as Commander-in-Chief in South Africa. Believing that the war was over, he handed command to Lord Kitchener and returned to Britain in triumph.
