STREET PORTRAITS COMPETITION

Get inspired by Hoppé and you could see your images on display at the Gallery

Like a well-cut gem London has a thousand facets and in all of them is a picture

E.O. Hoppé, The Image of London.

Hoppé Portraits showcases Hoppé’s fascinating photojournalist studies of everyday British life. Hoppé documented a wide variety of people in their environments including schoolchildren, waiters, postmen, circus performers and flower sellers. These ‘street’ photographs create a fascinating portrait of Britain and city life in London in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Many of the locations and activities depicted are still familiar today - London Zoo, Madame Tussauds, The Savoy Hotel, Hyde Park, commuters travelling on the London Underground and shoppers in Regent Street.

Inspired by Hoppé’s portrayal of his era through street photography we invited you to submit your photographic portraits of everyday life in the 2010s.

The Flickr competition is now closed. Thank you to all who entered. You can see all the entries here Hoppé Portraits Flickr group.

The winners will be announced on Friday 13 May 2011.

All the photographs entered will be projected at the Late Shift Extra event on Friday 13 May (18.00 – 22.00). The five winners will be put on display in the Gallery for the final two weeks of the exhibition and on the National Portrait Gallery website.

The five winners will also receive a copy of the exhibition catalogue (RRP £30) and a pair of tickets for our forthcoming photographic exhibitions Ida Kar: Bohemian Photographer and Glamour of the Gods: Hollywood Portraits.
