The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or who are currently contributing to British history and culture. With more than 1.5 million visitors each year, the Gallery is one of the country's most important and popular galleries.

Archive & Library Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping with the following activities one day a week on one of the days specified below:

Dry-mounting and mount filing portrait images (Monday, Tuesday, Friday)

Portrait indexing and filing (Thursday, Friday)

Learning Services Internship
One day a week for 6 months

The National Portrait Gallery is seeking to appoint a number of interns within the Learning Department and specifically within the Learning Services team. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in Gallery, Arts or Museum education, or for anyone wishing to supplement their existing skills.

The Learning Services team provide key logistical and administrative support for specific projects and programmes across the breadth of learning activity undertaken by the Learning and Access Department. In addition the team are responsible for running an effective bookings service for schools and young people as well as the efficient coordination of spaces, resources and equipment for these programmes.

The internship will be a great opportunity to work with the team in providing this key service of the NPG, you will also gain direct experience of working with visiting schools and teachers, gallery educators, freelance artists and supporting workshop delivery, which will be extremely useful if you are considering working with young people as an artist or if your interest is in gallery education as a whole.

Adult Programme Internship
One or two days a week for 6 months

The National Portrait Gallery is seeking to appoint an intern within the Learning Department and specifically in support of the Adult Programme. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in Gallery, Arts or Museum education, or for anyone wishing to supplement their existing skills.
The Adult Programme seeks to provide new learning opportunities, programmes and partnerships for informal and formal adult learners. You will have the opportunity to provide administrative and logistical support to the Adult Programme Manager in delivering a programme of public talks, events, tours, courses, study days and workshops that will take place both in the Ondaatje Lecture Theatre and in the galleries.
